Which order is right for you

Release order vs story order

Most viewers should watch in release order, starting with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, because it is the stronger story and the Hobbit films were made as prequels for an audience that already knew Middle-earth. Chronological order puts The Hobbit first, since it takes place about sixty years earlier. For a first journey, go with release order.

Release order follows the real-world dates the films came out. It is usually the safest choice for a first watch, because every reveal, cameo, and callback lands the way audiences experienced it at the time.

Story order follows the in-universe timeline instead, so prequels and period-set entries jump forward in the list. For The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit that means starting with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) rather than The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Switching orders moves 6 of the 6 titles. It is a good second pass once you already know the saga.
