Which order is right for you

Release order vs story order

Alien plays best in release order, because the 1979 original and Aliens define the creature before the prequels try to explain its origins. Chronological order starts with Prometheus and Covenant, then loops back to the original films, with Romulus fitting between Alien and Aliens. For the intended scares, watch by release date.

Release order follows the real-world dates the films came out. It is usually the safest choice for a first watch, because every reveal, cameo, and callback lands the way audiences experienced it at the time.

Story order follows the in-universe timeline instead, so prequels and period-set entries jump forward in the list. For Alien that means starting with Prometheus (2012) rather than Alien (1979). Switching orders moves 7 of the 7 titles. It is a good second pass once you already know the saga.
