3.X-Men: The Last Stand

Closes out the original trilogy, and its events are what the later time-travel film responds to.

4.X-Men: First Class

A prequel with a younger cast, showing how Charles and Erik became allies and then rivals.

5.X-Men: Days of Future Past

The hinge of the series, bridging both casts and rewriting the timeline for everything after.

6.X-Men: Apocalypse

Continues the prequel cast a decade on and brings in younger versions of familiar students.

Which order is right for you
Release order vs story order
The X-Men films are best watched in release order, because Days of Future Past deliberately rewrites the timeline and only pays off if you have seen the original trilogy first. Chronological order puts the 1960s-90s prequels first, which is tidy but spoils the reset. Start with release order.
Release order follows the real-world dates the films came out. It is usually the safest choice for a first watch, because every reveal, cameo, and callback lands the way audiences experienced it at the time.
Story order follows the in-universe timeline instead, so prequels and period-set entries jump forward in the list. For X-Men Film Series that means starting with X-Men: First Class (2011) rather than X-Men (2000). Switching orders moves 7 of the 7 titles. It is a good second pass once you already know the saga.
