Which order is right for you
Release order vs story order
The Conjuring Universe is best watched in release order, since the mainline Conjuring films anchor the story and the spinoffs were made to expand it afterward. Several spinoffs, including the Annabelle prequel and The Nun, take place earlier in the timeline. For a first watch, follow release order.
Release order follows the real-world dates the films came out. It is usually the safest choice for a first watch, because every reveal, cameo, and callback lands the way audiences experienced it at the time.
Story order follows the in-universe timeline instead, so prequels and period-set entries jump forward in the list. For The Conjuring Universe that means starting with The Nun (2018) rather than The Conjuring (2013). Switching orders moves 7 of the 9 titles. It is a good second pass once you already know the saga.
